France: nationwide general strike from 4 December

French nationwide strike from 4 December 

Transport affected:  SNCF, including InterCités the Nuit (international) and TGV (Lyria) high-speed lines, Renfe-SNCF en Cooperacion (trains between France and Spain), RATP (Paris public transport, including Transilien, RER and metros), EurostarThalysThello, ICE

 

This article will be updated when new information becomes available.

 

This overview from SNCF will be updated throughout the strike for all carriers affected.

 

General strike (Grève nationale interprofessionnelle)

There will be demonstrations in the city center of Paris on Tuesday 17 December.

 

The transport companies named above have been striking since December 4, this is an ongoing strike, no end date has been set. All transport throughout the country and Paris region is heavily impacted. All travelers are encouraged to rebook their tickets for different dates or request a refund and make use of other forms of transportation. 

 

SNCF

Train information throughout the strike can be found on their website and in the SNCF assistant app, information on next-day trains will be available daily at 17:00h each day. It is not clear yet how long the strike will last, so keep an eye on the strike information on the website of SNCF

RATP 

Public transport in Paris (Île-de-France) will be heavily disrupted. Travel information throughout the strike will be updated on this page.

For Transilien transport, check here to see what your options are. 

 

RENFE-SNCF Cooperacion

From 16 to 19 December there will be one train Paris - Barcelona (train 9713) and one train Barcelona - Paris (Train 9704) per day. All other trains are cancelled or it's not possible to buy tickets at this moment. If you have tickets for these days, you can request an exchange or cancel your ticket and request a full refund here.

 

Eurostar

Because of the strike in France, Eurostar will be running a reduced timetable, please check here if your train will be running. If your train is cancelled, you can exchange your ticket for travel on a different day or request a refund. 

 

Thalys

Thalys is requesting travellers to postpone any trips on Thalys trains until 22 December. Check here for train information per day (look for 'Social movement in France + date you're traveling' for more information for trains on that day). You can exchange your ticket(s) for original travel on these days free of charge, or request a refund. In case the strikes continue, please check the website of Thalys for information on trains.

 

Thello

Paris - Venice night train

Thello night trains will not run the complete route. Part of the route (Paris - Dijon - Milano) will be replaced by a bus service. In Milan you change to the Thello night train and continue your journey to other Thello destinations in Italy. 

 

Marseille - Milan day train

Thello day trains will have adjusted schedules, please look up your train here and see if your journey will be affected.

 

If you have a ticket for these dates, you can still travel with the option mentioned above, or you can cancel your trip and request a full refund through the Thello website.

 

Trains from France to Germany: ICE/TGV

The following routes in between France and Germany are affected:

  • ICE/TGV trains between Paris Est – Saarbrücken – Mannheim – Frankfurt am Main
  • TGV trains between Marseille – Strasbourg – Mannheim – Frankfurt am Main
  • ICE/TGV trains between Stuttgart – Strasbourg – Paris Est

 

If you are travelling on any of these routes on the days affected by the strike, please check if your train is still going in the DB booking tool. You can request an exchange or refund at any SNCF sales point.

 

Exchanges and refunds

If you've booked your seat reservations through our reservation service, please contact customer service. If you booked through the railway carrier or another service, please contact them.
