Scuba dive in Lake Ohrid

 

Lake Ohrid is known as a picturesque summer destination, but did you know it's also home to the Bay of Bones? Named after the bones found beneath the lake surface, this is a unique scuba diving experience. Swap rainbow fish and coral for a live archeological site, with pottery, animal bones and other findings preserved beneath the water.

Wander through the Old Bazaar, Skopje

 

If you can't get all the way down to Istanbul, don't worry! North Macedonia's capital city is home to a wonderful Old Bazaar, filled with galleries, mosques, museums, restaurants as well as traditional market stalls. Spend an afternoon wandering through the cool passages and try to grab a bargain on some local goods!

Visit the Millennium Cross, Skopje

 

The Millennium Cross is a 66m tall cross stuck upon the Vodno mountain, on the outskirts of Skopje. Built in 2009 to commemorate 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia, it's an incredible sight that can be easily reached from the city. Take the cable car up the mountain for unbelievable panoramas, or break a sweat by hiking up the mountain.

Dine on the shore of Lake Matka

 

Located close to Skopje, North Macedonia's capital, Lake Matka is a great day trip out of the city. With its serene surface and green surroundings, it's the perfect setting for an evening meal. Enjoy traditional Macedonian cuisine, whilst appreciating nature's beauty. What could be better?

See the Sveti Jovan Bigorski monastery

 

This picturesque religious settlement sits on the low regions of the Bistra Mountain and above the Radika River. Noted for its intricate woodcarvings, this charming place is well worth a visit.

Spend a night in a mountain hut, Pelister National Park 

 

Pelister National Park offers so many delights, but spending a night in a mountain hut is at the top of the list. With the southern Balkan mountains around you, rest, relax and appreciate nature at its finest.

Cross the stone bridge, Skopje

 

Skopje's Stone Bridge is such a big part of the city that it even features on the city's coat of arms. Rising above the river Vardar, it connects the old and modern parts of Skopje together, and must be crossed during your time in the capital.

Visit the ancient theatre, Ohrid 

 

Ohrid's turquoise waters are enough to make you want to go, right? But this ancient town also holds some other secrets that are worth seeing, such as the Ancient Theatre. Admire the rich history of this Hellenistic ruin, before heading back for yet another swim.

Explore the Bay of Bones Museum, Ohrid

 

If scuba diving in the lake isn't your thing, don't worry. Visit Ohrid's Bay of Bones Museum, an amazing reconstruction of an original settlement existing on the lake itself. Wander around the water museum and go into the prehistoric houses, seeing history really come to life.

Marvel at the Marble Lake

 

You might have to hire a car for this one, but it would be worth it. Hidden away in the mountains is a magnificent lake enclosed in a marble amphitheatre, an amazing sight to see. Take the time to swim and relax in the sun, before heading back down to your bed for the night.
