- How can I make a seat reservation?
You can reserve your train seats in the following ways:
- How far in advance can I make my reservations?
Reservations made through the Self-Service can be booked up to 3 hours before your train's departure. You can use the Self-Service to make reservations for trains in Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the Benelux. We advise you to book your trains as early as possible.
- Can the reservation tickets be emailed to me?
E-ticket reservations are only available through our Self-Service, for trains in Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the Benelux. Reservations for Spanish trains will also be sent to you as e-tickets.
All other reservation tickets are only available as paper documents, which we send to you by registered mail. It is not possible to print the tickets yourself or to have them mailed to you.
- Can I get e-tickets instead of paper tickets?
If you book your reservations through the Self-Service, you will receive them as e-tickets. The Self-Service can be used to book trains in Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the Benelux. Reservations for Spanish trains will also be delivered as e-tickets.
- When should I book trains with a limited seat allocation for pass holders?
The French Thalys and international TGV trains have a limited number of seats available for Interrail pass holders. We recommend that you make reservations for the high season (May - August) and at weekends as early as possible.
- Which trains can't be reserved with the Interrail reservation service?
The Interrail reservation service can make reservations for 95% of European trains. We're unable to make reservations for the following trains:
- How can we make sure the whole group is seated together?
To make sure you're seated together, please select the situation that applies to you and follow the instructions:
- When do I need to make train reservations?
Train reservations are required on most high-speed trains and all night trains, and can often be booked up to 2 months in advance. The Interrail Premium Pass includes free reservations. For all other Interrail Passes, additional reservation fees are not included.
It's often possible to avoid reservations by taking a slower, alternative route.
- How do I make a reservation for a train that departs in less than 8 working days?
If the train you want to reserve departs within 8 business days from the date you request them, we won't be able to process the reservation in time. We have information about alternative ways to make train reservations.
We require at least 8 working days because this gives us enough time to book the trains, process the payment, and ship the tickets to you. Most reservation tickets are hard copy tickets, so we can't send them by email.
Domestic Italian and Spanish day trains and day trains between Italy and Switzerland have a booking period of 3 working days. In this case, e-tickets are sent by email.
- Why can't I add a new travel companion to my Reservation Service profile?
If the traveller you are trying to add bought their Pass at Interrail.eu or Eurail.com and has a different order number to you, then they need to register for their own Reservation Service account before you can add them to yours. They can do this by logging in to the Reservation Service using their own account.
Once your companion has logged into the Reservation Service, you can add them to your profile. When you see the question "Is your traveling companion already registered in the Reservation Portal with a currently valid pass?" click on the "Yes" option then search for their email address and order number.
You can check your and your travel companion's order numbers in the confirmation email you received when ordering your Pass. The order number starts with IN or EU.
- What is the status of my Reservations order?
If your order has the status Submitted or Waiting for Shipping, this means our team is working on it. When the order has been processed, you will receive an email informing you of the status update. If your order contains e-tickets, these will be sent to you in a separate email.
We are currently experiencing extremely high volumes of reservation orders, so it can take up to 7 days to process your order. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.
- Why can't I log in to the Reservation Service?
We're currently having issues with the login of our Reservation system. We apologise for the inconvenience. Always try to log in with the same email address you used to purchase your Interrail Pass. If you are unable to log in, please try the following work-around:
- When can I make free train reservations?
As a holder of an Interrail Premium Pass, you can make free reservations from 3 months in advance.
We cannot handle reservation requests submitted less than 2 business days in advance of the departure date of the requested train. Therefore, it's important to make your free train reservations at least 2 business days in advance.
Sometimes trains get fully booked, so we advise making your reservations at the earliest opportunity.
- How many free reservations can I make?
With an Interrail Premium Pass you can make as many free train reservations as you want, within certain limits:
You can book 1 free reservation per route per person
International and night trains are not covered
If you book free train reservations for multiple travellers, they must all have Interrail Premium Passes
One free reservation per route
Free reservations with an Interrail Premium Pass really do cost nothing! To prevent abuse of this service, we limit the number of free reservations available to each Premium pass holder to 1 free reservation per route. This ensures you can book places on the train route you want to take - at the same time, leaving seats for other travellers.
A route is a direct, one-way train journey between 2 stations, for example Milan to Venice. The return journey is classed as a separate route, so you can book free reservations in both directions. Need to split your journey into 2 or more routes? That's fine, simply make free reservations for all routes.
- Interrail.eu Reservation Service
If you've registered with the Interrail.eu Reservation Service and have a question about your account, send an email to our Reservations team at:
- Do I need to request all my reservations at once through your service?
Although not obligated, we recommend you request all the trains you wish to reserve in one go. If one of your trains is unavailable, you can still make changes to your itinerary before you confirm everything.
If some of your trains can't be booked yet because it's too early, we recommend you still request those that can be reserved now. Just submit a new request once the remaining trains are within the booking period. You can also make the later reservations directly at a train station once you start your Interrail trip.
- Why do I have to pay for seat reservations when I already have an Interrail Pass?
Your Interrail Pass gives you access to trains run by the participating railway companies. For most high-speed and all night trains, the railway companies charge optional or compulsory reservation fees. This guarantees you a seat on popular or faster routes, which may become crowded during busy periods.
As a pass holder you only need to pay the reservation fee, not the full fare ticket. Please note that the reservation fees can differ depending on the country and type of train. Check out our overview of the reservation fees.
- Is it possible to avoid making train reservations?
Yes, you can easily avoid making train reservations. Reservations are only required for night trains and most high-speed trains. If you travel with (slower) regional trains instead, you can go anywhere in Europe without having to reserve a seat.
- There's an error on my reservation ticket. What should I do?
- My train is fully booked. How can I find alternatives?
You can find alternatives for your train in the Interrail timetable. Be sure to read the explanation below the timetable carefully. It will help you find a different train or perhaps a different route.
- How can I pay for my reservations?
You can pay for your reservations on the Interrail.eu Reservation Service with Mastercard, Visa, Amex or Paypal.
- Where can I make free train reservations?
Free train reservations with an Interrail Premium Pass can only be made using the Interrail.eu Reservation Service.
Requests should be made via our Reservations Portal at https://reservations.interrail.eu.
It's not possible to book free train reservations with an Interrail Premium Pass at the station, by phone, or through another website.
- Can I speed up the delivery time?
It's not possible to ship your reservations faster than the estimated delivery date. This date is calculated by our system, based on the shipping country selected during the payment process.
If there's not enough time to have your order shipped to your home, we can deliver your reservations to your accommodation in Europe, such as your hotel or hostel. Just make sure you enter both your name and the hotel's name in the shipping address, and let the hotel staff know you're expecting a package so that they will accept it on your behalf. Someone must be available to sign for receipt of the package.
If there's no way to get your tickets delivered anywhere in time, we advise you to not finalize payment. You should make new reservations directly at a train station in Europe. It's not possible to reserve tickets with us and pick them up at a train station.
- Why do reservations show an expiry date?
When you make a reservation request in the Reservation Service portal, you will see an expiry date to the right of each route in your itinerary. You must be sure to order the reservations before this expiry date. After this time we can no longer guarantee that the reservations are available and they will be automatically cancelled.
If you still want your reservations after they've expired, you need to make a new reservation request. Please note that for e-ticket reservations, the expiry date displayed is also the very last possible date you can reserve the route and time you've selected.
- What are the costs of a train reservation?
The costs of a train reservation consists of two different fees:
- Can I get a refund for lost or stolen tickets?
No, there is no refund for lost or stolen reservation tickets. Our Pass Protection only applies to Interrail passes. If you lose your reservation tickets, you will have to make new reservations, for instance at the train station.
- Can I get a refund for a reservation I’ve purchased but won’t use?
In general, we can refund your seat reservation ticket under the following conditions:
- What happens if I don’t pay for my reservations before the expiry date?
Once you've requested your reservations in the Reservation Service portal, you will see an expiry date at the bottom of the screen. You must be sure to make your payment for the reservations before this expiry date. After this time we can no longer guarantee that the reservations are available and they will be automatically cancelled.
- My reservation tickets haven’t arrived. What should I do?
The delivery of your reservation tickets depends on whether they are standard paper tickets or e-tickets. Please note that your order may consist of both paper tickets and e-tickets.
- In which countries do I need a reservation?
The national rail companies in Europe all approach reservations a little bit differently. In some countries, rail companies require very few reservations and you can hop on and off with nothing more than your Pass. In others, they require some sort of reservation on almost all trains. Because some railways require them, but others do not, reservation fees are not covered by your Pass. See below for a quick breakdown on which countries fall into which categories.
Click each country for additional information on train travel in that country. If you have questions about a particular train or route, you can also use our timetable to figure out if reservations are needed or to find a route that avoids them. If you do need to make a reservation, we can help!
