What are seat reservations?
A seat reservation is a ticket that ensures you'll have a place on a particular train, even if it's extremely busy. Reservations are mandatory for most high-speed trains and all night trains in Europe. They are not included in your Eurail Pass.
When you book a reservation, you need to pay a reservation fee. These fees vary based on the train and type of seat, and are charged by the railway company that runs the train.
You can often avoid reservations by traveling on regional trains. These trains are slower and have more stops, but give you more flexibility and the opportunity to stray off the beaten track.
